FLIGHT LOG FOR OCTOBER MEETING

Oct. 9, 2002

MEETING QUORUM

Mr. Secretary, do we have a quorum for a meeting? Yes with 27 members present. The meeting was called to order at 7:08 PM.

SECRETARIES REPORT

The September minutes were read. It was motioned, and seconded to approve the minutes, which were approved.

TREASURERS REPORT

John Corliss gave report of the proceeds of the first ever AeroWorks/Mile Hi Fun-Fly. This was a very successful event with the proceeds totalling $x.

GUESTS OR NEW MEMBERS

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Membership

Introduced as life members of the club were the following individuals:

Greg Corliss
Dale Milachek
Lil Pluckrose
Norma Kelly
Rick Emerson
Linda Emerson
Brian O’Meara

Publicity and Publications Committee Report

Dave Teich reported that there were only 4 fliers participate in the Gateway Parade of the Rockies in Aurora. There was himself, Roy Olsen, Mike Wilson, and the Corliss family and a friend.

Contest Committee

Results of the AeroWorks/MileHi FunFly fun class were as follows:

1st Place (and $50) – Rob Kelly
2nd Place – Eli Corliss
3rd Place – Rob Eide

The event was very well attended with many spectators and pilots. Rob Kelly flew the wings off his Sig Something Extra ARF to win first place in the fun class, then gave his $50 first place check to Eli Corliss. We had some excellent 3D demonstrations by various people flying several different models and sizes of AeroWorks planes. Unfortunately, due to a limited number of people signed up in the 3D event and the high winds the 3D competition was cancelled. The only down note of the day (except for the wind) was the loss of a very beautiful turbine powered jet.

Combat Squadron

Larry Ott was presented as the Top Gun for the Mile Hi RC 2002 combat season.

George Kerr reported that there will be an AMA sanctioned combat meet at Longmont on Oct. 26.

The club thanked George Kerr for doing so much to promote RC Combat at our club.

Field Maintenance Committee

Their will be a work party Saturday Oct. 19 at the field to remove the piles of concrete on the south end of the N/S runway and to fill cracks in the runways. Bring tools, pybars, sledge hammers, etc. The field will be closed to flying until all work is done so pitch in and help get it done quickly.

Field Safety Committee

An incident was reported where one pilot took off from the N/S runway while another was using the E/W runway and was in the cages on the E/W runway. Although the pilot on the E/W runway knew the other pilot was taking off from the N/S runway and okayed it, we cannot do this. We MUST have only ONE active runway at a time. Although nothing happened in this case, if something had happened and an injury or loss occurred, we could have lost our AMA charter and been denied insurance coverage if it was determined that we were not following the rules we and AMA have laid out.

The proper way to handle this situation (when the wind changes directions) is for ALL pilots flying on the E/W runway to land and clear the field before anyone takes off from the N/S runway.

OLD BUSINESS

None

NEW BUSINESS

John Corliss received notice from Arapahoe County that next year the lessee of State property will be responsible for paying the property tax on the land. This will not be due until next year. The estimated value of the land is $4,200.

Dave Teich entreated the membership to participate in community activities on behalf of the club. He said that community events like the Gateway Parade of the Rockies are a great way to gain recognition for our club with the civic leaders of these communities. He reported that the Arvada club has such a high profile and good reputation in their community that they were GIVEN land to build a club on by the city. Come on folks, get involved!!

Anyone good at PR? The Arvada club actually has a person in charge of PR.

Come to the meetings!! At least one gallon of fuel is raffled off. All club members that attend are automatically entered in this raffle for FREE! In addition, for $1 you can purchase a raffle ticket for a gift certificate to either Action Hobbies, Wild Blue Yonder Hobbies, or Colpar Hobbies. We discuss club business, safety, see demos of techniques or new models in addition to making decisions that affect the club and could affect you! It behooves you to be there.

It was brought up that the club needs a historian and librarian. The historian will be responsible for a couple of boxes of club records and what-not and will see that current club records, newsletters, awards or whatever get added. The club librarian is responsible for bringing a single plastic storage bin (on wheels) to the club meeting so that members can check out books, flight simulators, or videos contained in the library. George Kerr has been doing this job, but will not be able to continue so we need someone to step in and volunteer.

There was discussion about the use of the N/S runways and the location of the spectators during the AeroWorks Fun-Fly. The N/S runways were used due to wind direction, but some felt that the spectators were too close to the active runway.

Club events for 2003 were discussed. The Aeroworks Fun-Fly and other events this year have conflicted with other area events so the Board had discussed and come up with the following dates:

Jan. 1, 2003 – Polar Fly.
Jun. 24 – Pluckrose.
Jul. 18 – Dawn Patrol.
Aug. 2 – First ever Mile Hi RCCA combat event. Possibly a 2 day event.
Sep. 13 – AeroWorks/MileHi Fun-Fly.
Sept. 20 – Aurora parade.

Club member Randall Eaker has opened a new Interstate Batteries business in Aurora and discussed the kinds and types of batteries he has available. He even has the facilities to spot weld battery packs for R/C use and has a wide variety of NiCad and NiMH cells available. He is also offering a discount to club members. It sounds like he has everything from AAA cells to tractor batteries, so if you need something GO SEE HIM and support a club member.
