Dave Teich was given a sympathy card signed by many club members for the loss of his son Thomas who died of complications from cystic fibrosis. Tom lived an active life and lived years beyond life expectancy. Our thoughts are with you Dave.

Publicity and Publications Committee Report

Channel 8 will be at the field on Saturday at 8:00am, April 20th. We want to make a good impression so please wear your hats, shirts and jackets, and bring out a plane.

John Corliss reminded everyone we are looking for a Newsletter Editor. Anyone interested should contact John or our current editor Chris Branam.

Contest Committee

George Kerr reported that the Mile Hi R/C Combat Squadron held their FIRST EVER open Combat Meet on the afternoon of April 6th, 2002 at the Mile Hi R/C Flying Club field. Flying in the meet was Luke Corliss, John Jaugilas, Adam Bryant, John Corliss, Ely Corliss, and Ric Emerson flying Roy Olsen's plane.

John, Luke and Ely Corliss shared a plane, so each one flew in a round. With the low number of combat pilots, only one heat was necessary for each round. Four exciting rounds of open Combat were flown using modified National Sport Combat Club (NSCC) rules.

The winds were blowing with strong gusts and changing direction frequently. Despite the windy conditions the brave pilots were not deterred from flying their combat sorties.

The Corliss family plane went down in the first round, but was repaired and flying again in the fourth round. Good job John getting the plane repaired and flying again!! While the Corliss family plane was disabled, the Corliss family flew yours truly's SPAD FNS

Results are as follows:

0 kills, 2 cuts Adam Bryant SPAD Derelict

0 kills, 0 cuts Ely Corliss SPAD FNS

0 kills, 0 cuts Luke Corliss SPAD Derelict

0 kills, 0 cuts John Corliss SPAD FNS

0 kills, 0 cuts John Jaugilas Gremlin

0 kills, 0 cuts Ric Emerson, Roy Olsen team SPAD Derelict

Since this is our first ever meet, the yearly standings are the same as those above. Adam, you have bragging rights for at least the next month! Congratulation Adam!!!

Thanks also to Walt Stroessner for score keeping, Rich Dix for the extra hard hats, and Karl Tolley for the camera batteries.

I am looking forward to the next Mile Hi Combat Squadron meet on May 4, 2002

George (Web-Pilot) Kerr

SPEAKER

- George Kerr discussed the results of the first Mile Hi RC Combat Session (above).

- Adam Bryant brought in and showed a custom-built wing jig.

Field Maintenance Committee

Our Spring Work Party is scheduled for Saturday April 27th. We will be replacing table legs and moving concrete piles on the north side of the E-W runway. The club voted to spend approximately $700 for legs, paint, shed siding and hardware. Collins Hardware agreed to sell us items at cost. Marvin Sanders and Roy Olsen have agreed to put the siding on the shed. Marvin will let members know what painting assistance is needed. There was discussion about the shed siding and bench repairs. Members voted and approved the expenditure unanimously.

Field Safety Committee

There was discussion and agreement that when there are people flying, pilots taking off on the EW runway should taxi their planes to the pilot stations and take off either east or west, away from the stations. It was decided that this should not be a club rule, only a recommended procedure.

There was discussion about extending transmitter antennas, or use the transmitter holders, prior to starting the plane. It is easy to unintentionally throttle the plane while extending antennas after the plane has been started.

Old Business

Bob Bergin reported there are a few Mile Hi Jackets available for $15 and T-Shirts for $10.

New Business

     1. Members voted to invite other club members to participate in Mile-Hi combat sessions.

2. Members were asked to introduce themselves to other club members out at the field. There was an incident in March where non-members were flying at our field unannounced and without invitation. It is the policy of our club that non-members are welcome to fly, if they ask first and of course have a current AMA card.

3. There was discussion relating to control line flying. Due to the small number of   members who fly control line and the expense of creating a hard surface 120’ in diameter, the Club would not pursue establishing a control-line flying area at this time.

4. John Corliss reminded flyers to take home wrecked planes and not to leave them in the trash barrels.

5. There will be a Mile-Hi Club Pot Luck on Saturday May 4th, starting at 4:00 pm (weather permitting). Come early and watch the combat flyers.

6. The Pluckrose Memorial Fly-In is Saturday June 1st. Dave Teich has sent notices to suppliers for door/raffle prizes. Hans Pennink has made up a flyer and is getting it to hobby shops. A sign up sheet was circulated at the meeting and the following volunteer list has been established.

GLOW PLUGS Why do they Fail??

by Clay Ramskill

The "ignition system" in our engines is in the main, the glow plug. The other vital ingredient, compression, actually determines the ignition timing, so it can't be totally ignored. But usually its the plug that gives us the problems.

Why DO glow plugs fail? There are four likely probabilities, five if you count old age. Yes, old age! The plugs operate by using a catalytic (chemical) reaction with the alcohol in our fuel to maintain their heat; as the plug gets "old", it gets more and more covered up with combustion byproducts (carbon, etc.) which hinders the whole process. Of the other four, LEAN RUNS is probably the most prevalent - not so much that the engine was running lean, as it was HOT. Too much heat, and the element fries and shatters, or even melts.

TOO MUCH BATTERY power is another failure mode - very related to the above paragraph. Your battery should heat the plug to a nice bright orange or red orange color; if the plug glows white hot, it just isn't going to last. It's bad enough that we subject a tiny little element glowing hot, to the pressures of combustion. But if we add more VIBRATION to the situation, we get trouble. Unbalanced props, loose engine mounts, etc. may all add up to plug failure, especially in combination with too much heat.

Another plug failure mode is from FOULING. The element is very small, and located down in a well. It doesn't take much trash flying around in your combustion chamber to foul (and ruin) the plug! Aside from the obvious dirt coming through the intake or with the fuel, the fouling can come from metallic sources, usually a result of bearings coming unglued, or from excess carbon deposits in the engine. If the combustion chamber is full of caked-on carbon, pieces of that can, and do, come adrift and end up fouling the plug!

A quality plug run in a sport engine should last for dozens of flights. If they don't, its probably not the fault of the plugs - its time to look elsewhere for the source of the REAL problem!

Editor’s Note

There comes a time when the torch needs to be passed on to another club member. That time has arrived. I am unable to devote the time needed to put together a newsletter that this club deserves. This club needs someone to step up and take the controls of "Tailspinners" so that it doesn’t go into a nosedive. Could that pilot be you?

Next Board Meeting

The next Board meeting will be at Bob Bergin’s house on May 6th, 7 pm

Next Monthly Meeting

The next monthly meeting will be at 7pm, May 8th, 2002 at the Aurora South Library.
